NEXT
In 1909, Daniel H Burnham created The Plan of Chicago. His plan aimed to redesign the streets of Chicago, providing efficient and effective travel through the city. A big part of his plan included adding diagonal main streets through the city, all leading to one grand civic center. These diagonal streets were a part of his plan because they reduced travel time and produced further connectivity within the city. His inspiration came from Paris, Moscow, Berlin, and London, all having a radial city design.
CONCEPT
The interior design of NEXT takes inspiration from Ogden Avenue, the only new diagonal street introduced by Burnham’s Plan for Chicago, which now serves as a boundary for the Fulton Market district. This key thoroughfare represents the enduring success of Burnham’s vision, whose thoughtful urban planning continues to shape the city today. By drawing on the principles of his plan—such as spatial flow, connectivity, and the strategic use of materials—the design of NEXT integrates Chicago's rich history with its forward-looking spirit. The result is a dynamic work environment that fosters creativity, collaboration, and innovation, providing a space where NEXT’s employees can thrive, inspired by both the legacy of the city and the possibilities of the future.
